1 L’estinzione di specie animali e vegetali indigene dev’essere prevenuta mediante la conservazione di spazi vitali sufficienti (biotopi) e altri provvedimenti adeguati. Nel prendere questi provvedimenti sarà tenuto conto degli interessi agricoli e forestali degni di protezione.
1bis Devono essere segnatamente protetti le zone ripuali, le praterie a carice e le paludi, le fitocenosi forestali rare, le siepi, i boschetti in terreni aperti, i prati secchi e altri siti che nell’equilibrio naturale hanno una funzione compensatrice o presentano condizioni favorevoli alle biocenosi.56
1ter Se, tenuto conto di tutti gli interessi, non è possibile evitare che gli interventi tecnici pregiudichino biotopi degni di protezione, chi opera l’intervento prende misure speciali onde assicurarne la migliore protezione possibile, il ripristino o una sostituzione confacente.57
2 Nella lotta contro gl’insetti, specialmente con sostanze velenose, si baderà a non compromettere le specie animali e vegetali meritevoli di protezione.
3 La Confederazione può promuovere, in luoghi idonei, la riacclimazione di specie che allo stato selvaggio sono estinte, o in pericolo d’estinguersi, in Svizzera.
4 Sono riservate la legislazione federale sulla caccia e la protezione degli uccelli e quella sulla pesca.

1 The extinction of indigenous animal and plant species must be prevented by preserving sufficiently extensive habitats (biotopes) and by other appropriate measures. These measures must pay due regard to agricultural and forestry interests deserving protection.
1bis Special protection shall be given to riparian zones, fenlands and mires, rare forest communities, hedgerows, thickets, dry grasslands and other sites that play a role in preserving the ecological balance or which provide especially favourable conditions for biocoenoses.55
1ter If, after due consideration of the interests of all parties, damage by technical interventions to habitats deserving of protection is unavoidable, the party responsible must take measures to ensure the best possible protection, restoration, or, failing that, the provision of appropriate compensation.56
2 If pest control measures are taken, particularly by using toxic substances, care must be taken not to endanger animal and plant species deserving protection.
3 The Confederation may promote the resettlement in suitable sites of species that have become extinct in the wild in Switzerland or whose numbers are threatened.
4 The federal legislation on hunting and the protection of birds and on fisheries is reserved.
